Wood Types

We work with Oak, Cherry, Maple and Walnut – they provide a nice spectrum of natural wood tones to choose from, from the very light (maple) to the darker, more chocolate brown (walnut). Each wood type may have small inconsistencies i.e. lighter spots (sapwood) and/or darker spots (burl or crotch) and also different grain structures, ranging from wider open grain (oak) to more closed, smoother grain (cherry, maple). These characteristics are part of the natural beauty of each piece of wood and add greatly to the individuality and uniqueness of the finished product. The following is a guide to help you choose which wood type you might prefer:

Oak

Light to medium brown in colour. Varied and openly porous grain patterns. Engraving produces a distinctive ‘burnt’ effect quite different to other wood types.

Cherry

Pinkish brown when freshly cut it darkens to a warm reddish brown over time. Smooth, closed and straight grain it is great to engrave, producing strong contrast and good clarity.

Maple

Ranging from very light, nearly white to an off-white cream colour, but can sometimes have a golden hue. Closed straight or wavy grain, it engraves well with good definition but contrast is not as strong as other wood types.

Walnut

Lighter pale brown to dark chocolate brown with darker brown streaks. Moderately open grain, it engraves well but the darkness of the wood provides less contrast.

Bamboo

Not all bamboo is the same and just saying something is made from bamboo does not necessarily make it eco – far from it. Which type of bamboo plant is used and has the bamboo been responsibly harvested at the right time from a sustainable plantation? What chemicals or polymers might be mixed in with it during production? What sort of adhesives were used potentially giving off harmful emissions? There are actually all sorts of questions people should be asking about any bamboo product.

We only use MOSO® bamboo. All MOSO® material is made in production facilities that are ISO 9001 quality and ISO 14001 environmental third party certified and complies with the most stringent international standards. All adhesives used by MOSO® easily meet the very strict E1 class following the EN 717 standard with respect to formaldehyde emissions and all MOSO®’s solid bamboo materials are proven and certified to be carbon neutral or better over their full life cycle.

MOSO® bamboo as a material combines the virtues of hardwoods (hardness, looks, stability) with the immense growing capacity of the highly renewable giant moso bamboo species and can therefore act as a green carbon negative alternative material.

There is certainly cheaper bamboo material out there that people use, but none other actually combines the beauty of the finished product with eco credentials from properly conducted scientific tests and reports to internationally accepted standards.

Finish and Care

We prefer to enhance the natural qualities of the wood and bamboo with a few coats of clear oil and wax to ensure that they are as water resistant as possible, retain their original shape and last for as long as possible.

Our wood and bamboo products should be cleaned with an oil based furniture cleaner and cotton rag.  Since wood and bamboo are living materials they should be treated with care and kept from extreme temperatures, especially from damp or moist conditions for long periods of time.
